Nghiên cứu mô tả hiệu quả của phương pháp nút tĩnh mạch cửa và tĩnh mạch gan làm phì đại gan trước cắt gan lớn. Phương pháp nút tĩnh mạch gan bổ sung ở những bệnh nhân không tăng đủ thể tích gan sau nút tĩnh mạch cửa (PVE) cũng cho thấy kết quả khả quan. Cho tới nay, nhiều phương pháp gầy phì đại gan đã được áp dụng tùy thuộc vào mức độ phì đại gan cần thiết, tình trạng nhu mô gan cũng như chiến lược phẫu thuật của từng bệnh nhân. Các thủ thuật can thiệp qua da (PVE và LVD) ít xâm lấn hơn mặc dù đem lại tỷ lệ phì đại gan không bằng so với các phương pháp can thiệp phẫu thuật. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy LVD là thủ thuật có hiệu quả cao gây phì đại gan trước khi cắt gan lớn. LVD có nhiều ưu điểm vượt trội so với PVE. Tuy nhiên cần có những đánh giá với số lượng mẫu lớn hơn và so sánh ngẫu nhiên giữa LVD và các phương pháp gây phì đại gan khác.
