1804An analysis of the suggested translation of chapter 1 from the book “Approaches and methods in language teaching" by Jack C. Richards and Theodore S. Rodgers, 2001
I decided to choose chapter 1 to translate into Vietnamese: A brief history of language teaching from the book "Approaches and methods in language teaching" by Jack C. Richards. In chapter I, the author shows that there are a variety of approaches and methods in language teaching, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the earliest ways of language teaching is the Grammar-Translation Method, also known as the classical method. It's a method of teaching language skills that focuses on the grammar of the target language and then translates the grammar into another language, normally the students' native tongue. Besides, In the 1920s, the direct method of language teaching was proposed in opposition to the grammar-translation method. It was felt that listening and practice were thought to be the best ways for learners to learn how to pronounce their native language. During these periods, changes in teaching methods are usually accompanied by changes in the relationship between language and culture.
