$aThe road to Dien Bien Phu is a long one starting with the arrival in Viet Nam of Jesuit and Franciscan priests, mainly from France, the most notable one being Alexandre de Rhodes in 1627. He learned Vietnamese very quickly and impressed the Trinh emperor in Ha Noi. The emperor's advisors were not easily impressed and feared what they viewed as a brutal and domineering religion that would eventually undermine the emperor and the Vietnamese people. De Rhodes was exiled, but not before converting many innocent people and writing a Vietnamese dictionary, using an alphabet of his own invention, that is still used today.
