56988Screening and characterization of paclitaxel-producing fungus Talaromyces wortmannii WQF18 isolated from Cephalotaxus mannii Hook.f.
Cephalotaxus mannii Hook. f. is a rare evergreen conifer native listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, which is utilized for leukemia treatment. Although endophytic fungi from C. mannii was reported before, their cytotoxic property has not been revealed yet. In the present study, a total of 7 endophytic fungi were isolated from C. mannii collected in Ha Giang province, Vietnam, among which the isolate WQF18 was active against 5 tested pathogens with inhibition zones ranging from 18.0 ± 0.7 to 25.0 ± 0.4 mm.
56989Screening bile salt hydrolase activity of Lactobacillus isolated from Vietnamese human origins
In this study, Lactobacillus plantarum VFE-04, L. rhamnosus VFE-08, and L. plantarum VFE-14, had been isolated from Vietnamese healthy adults, were able to deconjugate glycodeoxycholate (GDC) on MRS plates and MRS broth supplemented with GDC. In addition, deconjugating activity of L. plantarum VFE-04, L. rhamnosus VFE-08, and L. plantarum VFE-14 were also found in cell-free extract as expressed by amount of glycine that released in the supernatant. Four bsh genes including bsh1, bsh2, bsh3, and bsh4 have been identified by PCR in these strains. In addition, L. plantarum VFE-04, L. rhamnosus VFE-08, and L. plantarum VFE-14 also showed high ability to resist bile salts and low pH. The results of 16S rRNA gene analyses showed that L. plantarum VFE-04, L. rhamnosus VFE-08, and L. plantarum VFE-14 and had high similarity scores with L. plantarum ZZU 23 (100%), L. rhamnosus JCM 1136 (99%) and L. plantarum S7 (98.65%), respectively. This study suggests that L. plantarum VFE-04, L. rhamnosus VFE-08, and L. plantarum VFE-14 have the potential to be explored as probiotics in the management of hypercholesterolaemia in near future.
56990Screening of neuroprotective substances relevant to Alzheimer’s disease from seaweed species collected in Ninh Thuan and Khanh Hoa provinces, Vietnam
Currently, nearly 36.5 million people live with Alzheimer’s disease worldwide, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition is considered the main treatment strategy against it. Seaweeds (or macroalgae) are a natural source of high-value bioactive compounds and have great potential in the production of health foods/foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, animal feeds, biofertilizers, and biofuels. The most studied and applied seaweed species include red seaweed (Rhodophyta), green seaweed (Chlorophyta) and brown seaweed (Phaeophyta). This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and neuroprotective activities of extracts/substances isolated with solvents including ethanol 75oand 96o, water, n-hexane, ethyl acetate under normal and ultrasonic conditions (power 80W, frequency 4.7 kHz and for 1 hour) from 5 economically important seaweed species belonging to genera Caulerpa, Sargassum, Gracilaria, Ulvaand Kappaphycuscollected in Ninh Thuan and Khanh Hoa provinces, Vietnam.
