Most expats and visitors to Vietnam can be divided into two groups: those who prefer Hanoi and those who prefer HoChiMinh City. I had always been staunchly loyal to Hanoi, my first love, and over the decade of living there I think I had acquired many of the attitudes and prejudices of Hanoians. Although HoChiMinh City was always ahead of Hanoi in its economic development, I had always seen it as the ugly sister to Hanoi's charm and culture. And then, in mid-2007 I went to live in HoChiMinh City for a year and something in me changed a little.
